Scrap recovery
With the aid of our Unimog's and fourteen specially adapted McCulloch Rail Trolley's, along with a highly skilled workforce we can remove more scrap rail in any possession than any of our rivals.
If the access is large enough the scrap rail is cut into 40 foot lengths, by us, to be removed. If it is a small access then we cut it into 20 foot lengths.
With the use of our specially adapted McCulloch Rail Trolley's, that have an adjustable beam so that no matter what the cant of the rail is the trolley is always level, W & D McCulloch can remove 24 lengths of 40 foot scrap rail in twenty minutes. That is 16 tons of scrap rail.
Ideally it would have been McCulloch Rail that removed the old rail and installed the new rail, meaning that the scrap rail would already be cut into 40 foot lengths and correctly positioned for the scrap recovery team that would follow on behind, to help us achieve the above targets.
Although we are the leading scrap recovery company in Scotland we are now spreading our wings into the rest of the UK where there are hundreds of miles of scrap rail waiting to be recovered.
Under ideal conditions we have removed two miles of scrap rail in one eight hour shift, which is something that W & D McCulloch Rail Division are very proud of.
McCulloch Rail are, without doubt, the leading scrap rail recovery company in Scotland.
Switches & Crossings (S&C)
When Switches & Crossings (S&C) are dropped off at any site they are inevitably some distance from where they are going to be installed and more often than not, facing in the wrong direction.
McCulloch Rail have designed and manufactured a Turntable device, which has a Patent Pending, that attaches to their Trac Rail Transposer, enabling the S&C to be turned in the smallest of spaces before being manoeuvered through the tightest of access' and transported to the correct place.
The method that is used by McCulloch Rail puts far less stress on the Switches compared to the conventional method using an RRV. The Turntable holds the S&C in a flat, secure way that does not allow the S&C to swing violently, unlike an RRV. Therefore it is a much safer and faster method of transporting S&C than by any other means.
If the place of installation of the S&C is within one mile the S&C is transported by the Trac Rail Transposers without ever being unloaded. If the S&C is going a greater distance it is loaded on to our specially adapted Rail Trolleys, which allows us to move the S&C any distance required. All of this can be done without any isolation to the OLE, meaning it is by far the most cost effective and inherently safest method of delivering S&C.
In the past McCulloch Rail have delivered a full set of S&C measuring 120 feet from Rutherglen to Uddingston, which is distance of 5 miles, for Network Rail.
This method can also be used on the 3rd Rail system, although it does require isolation. We have in the past shifted some S&C on the 3rd Rail in London without any problems.
Tunnels
Renewing, transposing rail or removing scrap rail from a tunnel can throw up some unique problems that don't occur anywhere else on the Rail Infrastructure.
Due to the humidity in the confound space of a tunnel the rail that is being renewed or transposed tends to adhere to the sleepers and when it is moved the sleepers can move along with it.
McCulloch Rail eliminate the chance of any sleeper movement by ensuring that at least two Trac Rail Transposers travel on the sleepers at all times. This ensures that the sleeper are held in position while the rail is renewed, transposed or taken out as scrap.
Due to the compact size of our machinery there is no isolation of the OLE required whilst the work is undertaken. This is, once again, the most cost effective, quickest way of working in any tunnel.
Bullhead Rail
Installing and removing Bullhead Rail is one of our specialities here at McCulloch Rail.
We have recently delivered and re-railed 72 lengths of Bullhead Rail on Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is known to most people through the Harry Potter films.
After installing the new Bullhead Rail we cut up the old scrap rail and delivered it back to the access. This was all done in a period of eight shifts.
We have also delivered and installed 60 foot lengths of Bullhead Rail before cutting up the old rail and removing it at Ardlui.
Both of these jobs were successfully completed on time and on budget by McCulloch Rail for Babcock Rail.
